Director of Public Works Greg Hanover said his employees as well as volunteers try to pick up as much litters along roads here but there’s only so much they can do with the equipment they have.
So the town is planning to buy a new piece of equipment: a litter vacuum. The small vehicle sucks up trash along sidewalks, parking lots, parks and other areas that a normal street sweeper can not reach.
Hanover said it can be used year round, and a few other cities in the state are using them such as Waterbury, which says the vehicles work well and are fairly maintenance free.
Groton plans to purchase a diesel Madvac All-Terrain Litter Vacuum LR50, described in the company’s brochure as a “compact urban cleaning vehicle,” that picks up litter six times faster than picking it up by hand. The small vehicle has a closed compartment for the driver, who operates the equipment’s robotic arm.
