As the fog hovering over the redoubt and overgrown earthworks of Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park burned off Saturday morning, the sounds of cawing crows and pattering rain competed with the blares of barges from the nearby Thames River.
It was from that waterway 244 years ago that 800 British troops disembarked from ships and made their way through swampy ground to confront an undersized force of militia manning the fort.
By the time the 40-minute battle — or massacre — ended, at least 85 defenders were dead and the fort was in the hands of British soldiers under the command of Gen. Benedict Arnold.
