A new initiative will look at how increasing different housing types, such as townhouses or cottage communities, could help meet Groton’s demand for housing as the defense industry expands.
The town received a $350,000 grant from the Department of Defense Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation for a “Mission-Compatible Missing Middle Housing” study.
The goal is to explore “missing middle housing” and what types of housing would be appropriate for Groton, and where such housing could be incorporated, said Jeff Davis, senior planner at Horsely Witten Group, an environmental consulting firm leading the study.
The nonprofit National League of Cities defines missing middle housing as diverse housing types “along the spectrum of affordability,” including townhomes, duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, bungalows and cottage housing.
