The sun had not yet risen as members of the USS Groton Sail Foundation stood on the sidewalks outside the Electric Boat contractor's gate on Eastern Point Road Tuesday morning. Holding a sign that read "Welcome Home USS Groton," they kept an eye out for two flatbed trailers carrying pieces of the sail of the USS Groton (SSN-694).

"This is such a major milestone for our project," said James Streeter, treasurer of the foundation's board.

The monument, which will be located in a grassy area along Route 117 adjacent to the Groton Public Library, will display the decommissioned submarine's sail, rudder and fairwater planes.  In total the pieces weigh over 100,000 pounds and took at least two trips for the two trucks to transport them from Rhode Island.
