Electric Boat awarded $1.1 billion for latest submarine project

The U.S. Navy is pushing ahead with a pair of Virginia-class submarines that will be built by the Electric Boat shipyard in Groton after reported delays over issues of liability in any mishap involving missiles carried by the subs. The subs are the first two in the newest versions of the Virginia-class fleet, fast-attack subs equipped with cruise missiles. More than $1 billion in initial work will fund "long lead time material," in Navy parlance, at subcontractors in California and several other states, including unspecified work in Windsor Locks.
