The USS Nautilus was built at the Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton and was the first nuclear-powered ship to be commissioned by the United States Navy in 1954. The submarine would set speed and distance records for submerged vessels. One of its accomplishments was making the first crossing of the North Pole by ship in 1958. The Nautilus served until 1980, when it was decommissioned. The submarine was important for its demonstration of the use of nuclear power as an energy source, rather than a weapon.
