Connecticut has played a crucial role in the defense of the United States for more than 100 years. General Dynamics Electric Boat, which is headquartered in Groton, began building underwater vessels in 1899. The company supplied the U.S. Navy with 85 submarines during WWI, and another 74 diesel submarines during WWII. These contributions earned Groton the nickname “Submarine Capital of the World.”

New innovations in underwater technology continue to be developed in Groton to help the Navy do its job protecting the United States. This is where the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine was built; the Navy’s first ballistic-missile submarines were also commissioned here.
