Norwich Public Utilities and Groton Utilities have awarded $356,000 to help fund energy efficiency projects in Norwich, Groton and Lebanon through a state tax credit program that diverts state taxes to approved projects.
Although NPU and GU are nonprofit, municipally-owned utilities, they pay state gross receipts taxes on wholesale electricity they purchase. The state Neighborhood Assistance Act program allows the utilities to award grants of up to $150,000 per year to energy efficiency projects deemed eligible by the state to receive the grants.
